Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE)

SPACE Parenting Support

When a child or teen is struggling with anxiety, it can affect the whole family. Many parents find themselves constantly reassuring, adjusting routines, avoiding difficult situations, or stepping in to prevent their child from becoming distressed. These responses come from a place of love and protection—but over time they can unintentionally keep anxiety in charge.

SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based parent-focused approach designed to help caregivers support a child or teen with anxiety, OCD, school avoidance, separation anxiety, phobias, or other anxiety-related challenges.

Rather than focusing on changing the child directly, SPACE works by working solely with parents make changes in the way they respond to anxiety. Parents learn how to increase supportive responses while gradually reducing accommodations that may be maintaining the anxiety cycle.

Parenting a child with anxiety can be exhausting. Many caregivers feel caught between wanting to protect their child and wanting to help them become more independent. My goal is to provide a supportive, non-judgmental space where we can understand the anxiety cycle together and develop practical strategies that strengthen both your child’s confidence and your relationship with them.

What is SPACE?

SPACE was developed by the Yale Child Study Center and is supported by research showing that working with parents alone can lead to significant improvements in a child’s anxiety symptoms.

The approach is especially helpful when:

  • Your child is resistant to attending therapy

  • Your child has attended therapy but anxiety remains highly impactful

  • You feel stuck in repetitive reassurance or conflict cycles

  • Family routines are increasingly organized around anxiety

  • You want practical tools that can be used at home

What do sessions look like?

SPACE support is typically offered through parent-only sessions. We begin by understanding how anxiety is showing up in your child’s life and identifying the accommodations currently occurring at home.

Together we create a step-by-step plan that feels realistic for your family. Sessions include psychoeducation, problem-solving, communication strategies, and ongoing support as changes are implemented.

Who is this for?
